The European Parliament

Our frequent seminars and round-table events bring together key representatives from the European Commission, the European Parliament and other organisations to discuss the implications of European policy developments or to give advice on how to maximise European funding opportunities.

The European Parliament is the only directly elected European institution. The Parliament has considerable influencing and legislative powers.

The London Councils European Service can help you  be in touch with MEPs and their advisers to inform and influence the European debate. London has nine Members of the European Parliament (MEPs).

Committee of the Regions

London currently has four representatives sitting on the Committee of the Regions (CoR),  the official voice of local and regional government in Europe. It is expected that a fifth London representative, Cllr Demirci will be appointed in the following months (after the end of Gaby Kagan's membership). 

This consultative body provides an opportunity for local and regional politicians to shape the development of European policy and funding and to ensure that the interests of their areas are effectively represented. CoR members are appointed as rapporteurs to draft opinions on Commission proposals and are able to use experts to assist them in the task. The London Councils European Service has acted as experts for opinions by Cllr Dame Sally Powell and Jennette Arnold AM.
