Violence against Women: Conference The conference will provide an opportunity for Member States to discuss the future need for EU support in the fight against violence against women. Currently, the Commission supports Member States in several ways including through the
DAPHNE III Programme, which finances projects that work to prevent and combat violence against children, women and young people and to protect vulnerable people and different risk groups. Indeed, the DAPHNE III Programme is sponsoring the Conference.
According to the
Mayor’s Office , violence against women in London is linked to higher levels of child poverty, increased levels of substance abuse and costs the city approximately £5.6 billion a year. Last year the number of reported rapes in the capital increased by 14.5% and reported domestic violence incidents rose by 4.4%. However, only an estimated 10% of women who have been raped report it to the police and only six per cent of all rape cases end in a conviction. The Mayor made plans to tackle this through his “The Way Forward – A call for action to end violence against women”, which includes plans to work with the Metropolitan Police to tackle the trafficking of women for sexual exploitation ahead of the Olympics. Nevertheless, reports of the planned closure of the Met Police’s Human Trafficking Team have recently been released, causing concern amongst women’s rights and anti-trafficking groups.
